You Know Me Well - David Levithan and Nina LaCour

'Who Knows you well? Your best friend? Your boyfriend or girlfriend? A stranger you meet on a crazy night? No one, really?'

This book is fantastic. If you need me to back up this opinion I have two points...

1. I read this book in under 2 hours (which is very fast for me as I usually take weeks to read a 300 page book - this one is 248)
2. I paid the ridiculous price of $24.99 NZD for this when I just wanted an author I knew when I was in a place I didn't know. (that's about £12.50 or $17.70 USD for a paperback)

First of, I want to talk about the characters. I don't know if each author was in charge of each character or if they created and voiced both together, however they did it, they did a great job.

Mark is brilliant. One of the first things we see him do is dance on a bar with his shirt off which I see as incredibly brave and a VERY big hint that he likes Ryan (his best friend). It is during this dance that he spots Kate, a girl from his school, in the same bar. I have seen some reviews that say this is very unrealistic insta-friendship however I disagree. They must have both been so relieved to see that someone else their age at their school was also gay and they finally had someone they could talk to about it.

Kate also has a romantic interest called Violet, however, they have never met - she only knows about her through her friend. Throughout this novel, Mark supports Kate in trying to find Violet and Kate supports Mark with his love for Ryan.

Ryan very quickly confides in Kate and Violet saying, ‘I tell him all the time—I just make sure it’s never when he’s listening. I say it when he’s in the other room, or when he’s asleep, or when the music’s really loud. Sometimes he asks me what I just said. And I tell him never mind. Or I make up something else, something that isn’t ‘I love you.’

This is a heart-warming story of discovery, love, and acceptance that shows us that people's true emotions aren't usually what we see or expect.
