June TBR – Celebrating Pride Month Through Literature

Hello hello hello! June, as we all know, is pride month. That’s why my tbr for June 2022 is filled with LGBTQIA+ stories to celebrate that these books are out in the world. At the beginning of this month I submitted my dissertation for my undergrad degree in English. For that paper I researched some of the history of sexuality laws and it made me so grateful of how far we have come in our love for all people. A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue – by Mackenzi Lee This historical fiction YA novel follows Henry Montague, or as we know and love him – Monty. Monty is raised as a gentleman but he is truly a rogue at heart. Drinking too much, gambling and sleeping with countless women… and men. Monty is bisexual in a time when this love could only be shown behind closed doors. Monty is in love with his best friend Percy who is leaving for college in Holland the following year. I'll Give You The Sun - Jandy Nelson Beautiful. Stunning. Amazing. Wow I cannot believe how much I loved this book! Jandy writes this story from the perspective of twins, she writes the brother's, Noah's, perspective when he is 13-14 and the sister's, Jude's, perspective when she is 16. They grow apart in both perspectives but then come back together in Jude's last chapter. All of Jude's chapters are called 'The History of Luck' and Noah's are called 'The Invisible Museum'. These titles almost explain how each character is feeling at these points in their life. Noah makes art in his head after not being accepted at an art school and Jude believes she needs to have all of these good luck charms from her grandma's bible to survive. In Noah's perspective, he draws beautiful art and is in love with a boy called Brian. This love story goes from suppressed emotions to forced sexuality to admitting they liked each other. In Jude...
