Book to Screen Adaptation Highlight - Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Verse


 Leigh Bardugo's novels following various characters in the Grisha Verse was picked up to be a netflix show in April 2021. There are currently 8 episodes out however we have been promised that there will be more coming! This show is titled Shadow and Bone, the same title as the first book of Bardugo's original trilogy. 

The show does not only focus on events from this book but instead uses the duology

Six of Crows and changes the story slightly. At first, I thought this would annoy me as the crows never meet Alina in the novels but now they are in the same situations with each other. It did not annoy me at all, I loved how they took both books and gave us a new story. In my opinion, making a book into a screen adaptation and trying to get it as close to the book as possible is inevitably going to annoy some readers and cries of 'the book was better' and 'that didn't happen in the book' will rise. With this show, readers don't really have the grounds to say the latter. The show has not taken the novel and used it as a script but rather taken the characters and overall plot and presented it to us in a different way. I, for one, am extremely happy for any extra content containing Jesper Fahey and Kaz Brekker. And, if I'm being honest, I'm glad that the show has more to focus on than Alina and Mal's questionable love story. (Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the trilogy. I just didn't enjoy Mal).

June TBR – Celebrating Pride Month Through Literature

Hello hello hello! June, as we all know, is pride month. That’s why my tbr for June 2022 is filled with LGBTQIA+ stories to celebrate that these books are out in the world. At the beginning of this month I submitted my dissertation for my undergrad degree in English. I'll Give You The Sun - Jandy Nelson Beautiful. Stunning. Amazing. Wow I cannot believe how much I loved this book! Jandy writes this story from the perspective of twins, she writes the brother's, Noah's, perspective when he is 13-14 and the sister's, Jude's, perspective when she is 16. They grow apart in both perspectives but then come back together in Jude's last chapter. All of Jude's chapters are called 'The History of Luck' and Noah's are called 'The Invisible Museum'. These titles almost explain how each character is feeling at these points in their life. Noah makes art in his head after not being accepted at an art school and Jude believes she needs to have all of these good luck charms from her grandma's bible to survive.
