I'll Give You The Sun - Review with SPOILERS
I'll Give You The Sun - Jandy Nelson
Beautiful. Stunning. Amazing. Wow
I cannot believe how much I loved this book!
Jandy writes this story from the perspective of twins, she writes the brother's, Noah's, perspective when he is 13-14 and the sister's, Jude's, perspective when she is 16.
They grow apart in both perspectives but then come back together in Jude's last chapter.
All of Jude's chapters are called 'The History of Luck' and Noah's are called 'The Invisible Museum'.
These titles almost explain how each character is feeling at these points in their life.
Noah makes art in his head after not being accepted at an art school and Jude believes she needs to have all of these good luck charms from her grandma's bible to survive.
In Noah's perspective, he draws beautiful art and is in love with a boy called Brian. This love story goes from suppressed emotions to forced sexuality to admitting they liked each other.
In Jude's perspective, she is being guided by her mother. Forcefully. In the form of her mother's ghost is breaking everything Jude makes at art school (to the point she is called calamity Jude or CJ) so she will end up finding G. to teach her stone sculpting. When Jude find's G. Oscar Ralph is found too.
Ok so overview over - you should know all of that anyway since you are reading a review with spoilers so if you haven't read it then WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
Now for my favourite parts of this book...
The parrot.
There is a parrot that lives next door to Noah and Jude and constantly says 'where the hell is Ralph' and when Oscar comes to their house and introduces himself as Oscar Ralph, Jude's brother and dad tell her she had finally found Ralph. I think this is so emotional and important to the story because this bird has been screaming and begging for Ralph to come into their life and I feel like Jude was screaming for Oscar as well. Before they met, Jude decided to hide herself from the world and not talk to boys again and Oscar helps guide her back to her real self and I think that is an important thing for you to remember.
The kissing painting.
Oh. My. God. This made me even more emotional than the parrot.
We find out late on in the novel that G. and Jude's mother were in love and Jude's mum painted this based on how kissing G. made her feel.
I can't imagine how that feels. To be so in love she has to paint it and hang it on the wall so they can look at it and remember their love and just agh.
Leading on from this, G. destroying his office after Jude's mum dies and then cleaning it up when he realises he has found the kids of the woman he loves. This is also very important to me. The whole sense of family G. has made for himself. He found and helped Oscar, he helped Jude, and he also helped Noah realise he should have never stopped making art.
Oscar kissing the other girl.
Controversial I know but I think Jandy was right for showing that people can make mistakes when they are scared or feeling rejected and that mistakes don't mean the end of a relationship.
Jude's reaction was very accurate and Oscar handled it very well in my opinion. He kissed that girl because he was scared that he really liked Jude when he hasn't had a serious relationship for a while (add G.'s threat's to his list of worries haha) so he freaked. Completely normal reaction. While I wouldn't forgive the guy straight away (which Jude didn't) I would realise that he could do that all the time but he still chose me. I think this shows how much Oscar loves Jude because if he didn't then he would just take what he wants then move on.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book and it has secured itself in my list of top 10 favourite books.
I really want to read more from Jandy Nelson and will absolutely do a review every time I read one of her books.
Thanks for reading! :)
